Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin primarily found in foods such as meat, fish, shellfish and liver. It is necessary for forming red blood cells, replicating DNA, nerves, and lowering homocysteine levels which reduces a person’s risk of stroke and heart attack.
A deficiency of B12 can lead to a multitude of symptoms, such as easy bruising, decreased energy, sleep disturbances, depressed mood and other mood changes and weight gain. Other common symptoms include memory loss, reduced focus and concentration, numbness and tingling of extremities, and migraines. Vitamin B12 deficiency is often also accompanied by a thyroid and/or adrenal dysfunction.

Not all B12 vitamins are the same. When supplementing, there are 3 common forms of bioavailable B12: cyanocobalamin, hydroxcobalamin and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is the least bioavailable form and is often used in retail supplements due to its stability, long lasting shelf life, and cost. Hydroxycobalamin and methylcobalamin are both better absorbed (with methylcobalamin being the most bioavailable) in the blood stream and can also directly influence nervous system function which cyanocobalamin cannot.
